Geared up for Challenge Week at fic-promptly but no challenge!

Our beloved mod is so snowed under there hasn't been time to post a challenge.

Oh well, I wrote a fill anyway whilst I was waiting for it to make an appearance. I need the word count boost before the end of the month. :)

Day one - No standing anytime

I was ready, more or less, but our poor mod is really struggling at the moment so it looks like there won't be a challenge week this time around.

Ah well, I have my [livejournal.com profile] spook_me stories to write so maybe I should make a start on those instead...

I do have other projects as well. I just wasn't quite mentally geared for plotting and outlining this week, really I just want to get words on a page! This fic I've had for ages is still in its infancy because I can't get the outline sorted, all I have is the main story arc and lots of little bits of detailed sections fleshed out at the beginning, but a huge nothing in the middle. *headdesk*

It always impresses me that you plot and plan! I just start writing whether I have any idea of what to write or not. That's what I'm doing for the latest beattheblackdog, no idea where I'm going, but I have words, so I'll end up with something. Whether or not it's any good is another matter *grins*

I'll have to start one of the spook_me's soon though. Hopefully I'll be okay once I start because I really don't know what to do, except a vague notion that the Space Monster one will be in my Ghost of a Chance 'verse aboard the Happy Wanderer... o_O

Oh, no. 99.9% of the time I'm a complete pantser! I have no idea where I'm going with anything! It's only for the bigger projects. I've only done a handful in what I'd call the 10k plus range, but what I have learned from those is that they do need to be planned. Big fics are just too scary to attempt with no plan at all, or end up in disaster (as I discovered during my first go, writing myself into a corner that took me four months to get out of). A basic outline gives me something to work with so I can write with purpose and come up with all the nice little details and twists along the way. Plus, I can't write in a straight line. I write the bits that I get inspiration for, regardless of where they fit into the main story, and then have to piece it all together somehow. Without an outline I'd never have finished my winter companion piece in three weeks.
The one I'm working on now started months ago as a bit of a ramble for about 10k with no real plot progression. Lots of great detail and a massive Pinterest pinboard of pictures that I use for describing the setting, but the detailed plot is totally non-existent. It needs lots of love and a good chunk of hours for me to sit quietly somewhere and work out all the kinks in the storyline so it's not just one big boring mess.

Well I'm still impressed because I've never planned anything, not even Through Time and Space. I knew Jack and Ianto would find each other in the end, but aside from that I just let fan_flashworks prompts guide the story. It was weird but it worked out okay. Don't think I'll try anything that long again though, took me over a year to write.

Good luck with figuring out the plot of the one you're writing!
