I think he was just overwhelmed by the sudden realisation that somewhere along the way he'd forgotten who he was without needing to be all things to someone else. He needed to know that his life didn't have to be consumed entirely by another person, but that he could share it without losing himself in the process.
They'll be just fine from here on in. They need each other. :)
